Introduction

This guide is targeted at students who are conducting research for courses in entrepreneurship or family business or who are interested in learning more about small business and new venture creation. It includes print sources and Databases available in our Library as well as useful websites.

    A very thorough guide to conducting business research, targeted specifically at entrepreneurs, that covers researching business ideas, marketing, industry and operations analysis. The appendix includes a massive list of print and online sources.
  • A review and annotated bibliography of family business studies.

    Includes detailed annotations of empirical and theoretical research on family business.

  • Resource guide for business immigrants to Ontario.

    This guide includes information on starting, financing and managing a small business. There is a business planning guide with three sample business plans.

    A directory of over 1300 business ideas, organized into categories such as advertising, entertainment, home improvement etc. Each entry notes approximate start-up costs and there is an appendix of resources including government offices, magazines, books and web sites.

    Covers over 5000 American and Canadian franchise opportunities. Each entry includes contact information, and details on franchise fees, royalties etc. The handbook section includes guidelines on investigating the franchisor, product or service and franchisees.
  • Investigating entrepreneurial opportunities : a practical guide for due diligence.

    This guide is targeted at potential business buyers and describes the due diligence process which includes researching markets, products, facilities and finances to determine whether or not to acquire a business.

  • Think big : nine ways to make millions from your ideas.

    This source is most relevant for inventors interested in bringing their product to market. It includes information on trade shows, TV and mail order catalogs, Internet sales, joint ventures, private label marketing, licensing and forming your own company.

Intellectual Property: Patents, Trademarks and Copyright

Go to the Canadian Intellectual Property Office(CIPO) on the Strategis website to learn more about patents, trade-marks, copyright and industrial designs. There are numerous guides, links to relevant legislation and links to the Canadian Patent Database an Trademark Database and the Canadian Copyright Database. You will also find links to other countries' patent databases from the CIPO website.

Databases and Periodical Indexes

There is no single database or index that focuses exclusively on entrepreneurship and small business. The entrepreneurship literature is concentrated largely in business databases, but may also be found in multidisciplinary journal collections. Here are the databases that I find most useful:
